Discover Ancient & Modern Beirut — and Beyond

Standard DreamTrip
Stay at a luxurious hotel & enjoy 2 full-day tours to see incredible sights in & around Beirut — including downtown Martyrs’ Square, the ancient ruins of Byblos & the spectacular Jeita Grotto underground river and caves. Book by August 27.

About Your Trip

One of the most beautiful cities in the Middle East, Beirut, Lebanon, is a striking blend of old and new, boasting diverse cultures that have emerged from the many different civilizations that colonized the city over thousands of years. During this fascinating DreamTrip, you’ll see for yourself why Beirut is so special as you delve into culture and history on 2 fully immersive tours.

Your first outing takes you sightseeing through the city itself, starting with a visit to Beirut National Museum for a glimpse into the city’s history and culture. Continue to Nicolas Ibrahim Sursock Museum — known as Sursock Museum and primarily showcasing the work of Lebanese artists — and the Mim Mineral Museum with its significant collection of minerals from around the world. After a delicious seafood lunch, head to iconic Martyrs’ Square. While you’re downtown, check out Beirut’s old churches and souks (markets) along with the ruins of Roman baths.

The following day, you’ll leave the city behind for an excursion along the coast to ancient Byblos and back. First, visit Jeita Grotto, a subterranean river and cave system supplying fresh water for much of Beirut. From there, you’re off to Harissa, the hilltop home of Our Lady of Lebanon, an important pilgrimage site visited by Christians and Muslims alike. At UNESCO-protected Byblos, you’ll see extraordinary ruins from different eras of Lebanon’s colonization, including a Phoenician royal necropolis, a Roman amphitheater and a castle built by the Crusaders. Before returning to Beirut, you’ll also see the medieval St. John-Marc Church and visit the old souk by the harbor.

What we love:
• Estimated to date from prehistoric times, Jeita Grotto in Jitta is made up of 2 separate, though connected, karstic limestone caves extending a total distance of 5.6 miles (9 kilometers).
• Since its creation in 1908, multiple shrines have been built around the Our Lady of Lebanon statue to accommodate the nearly 2 million pilgrims of different faiths who visit the statue every year.
• Beirut has been destroyed and rebuilt at least 7 times in its 5,000-year history.

Destination

Perfectly set overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, Beirut, Lebanon, was initially established as an outpost of the ancient Phoenician world. Over time, it was invaded by the Byzantines, Romans, Ottomans and others, with each empire leaving a mark on the city. The final colonizer, France, may have had the greatest impact culturally — notably evident in the city’s language and cuisine. French influences also helped to modernize Beirut to where the city became a cosmopolitan playground for wealthy jet setters, often referred to as “The Paris of the Middle East.”

Starting in 1975, Beirut was frequently under siege during Lebanon’s civil war, its downtown left in ruins by the war’s end in 1990. Restoration efforts have once again modernized the downtown — Beirut has been rebuilt numerous times in its centuries-long history — with sleek upscale structures now sitting alongside grand heritage ones. Highlights include the lively Hamra neighborhood, Nijmeh Square, Martyrs’ Square and the Roman baths, along with all the beautiful mosques, cathedrals and temples that dot the city.
